pepper pot fungus

Pepper Pot Myriostoma coliforme

The Pepper Pot (Myriostoma coliforme) is one of Britain’s most remarkable and rarest fungi – an extraordinary earthstar relative unique in producing multiple stalks and multiple spore pores, unlike any other British species. Globally scarce, it is found on light, sandy soils in open woodland and scrub. Suffolk has a long association with this fungus, with historic records from the Bury St Edmunds and Mildenhall areas making it one of the most important counties for the species nationally. Modern records remain rare and sporadic, and any verified Suffolk sighting is of considerable significance to the national picture. Image: © Aleksandr Popov, iNaturalist.
